Melbourne Chosen Best City in Australia
64If you are thinking of moving to or visiting Australia you could do worse than head to Melbourne, literally.
Sydney has long been considered the number destination in Australia, but a new survey has found that Melbourne is the best city in Australia, and that’s not just according to the locals.
The 2010 Roy Morgan Research Brand Health survey of 1400 Australians has found that Melbourne ranks higher than Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide in terms of attractions and things to do.
Melbourne is the best city to visit and live in for:
- Major international sporting and cultural events;
- Interesting cafes, bars and nightlife;
- Theatre;
- Quality food experiences and world class restaurants;
- World class golf courses;
- Shopping; and
- Regional sights close to the city.
But frankly, this is something that those who have visited Melbourne or who live here already know.
So what makes Melbourne the best city in Australia?
World Class Events
Melbourne has been host to a number of world class cultural and sporting events. This year it has hosted the European Masters Exhibition, the Formula One Grand Prix, and the Spring Racing Carnival, which attracts horses from around the world along with local and international celebrities.
In 2011 Melbourne will host Geoff Ogilvy and Tiger Woods at the Australian Masters, while the Australian premiere of Love Never Dies will be held in Melbourne.
Best Shopping in Australia
With its numerous boutique stores stocked with local and international designer brands, revamped shopping malls (including the fabulously renovated Myer store), and fantastic markets and vintage stores, Melbourne really is the place to go for the best shopping in Australia.
Best City for Theatre
Melbourne continues to lead as the city best known for great theatre. Its reputation as a theatre destination has been enhanced by being the first city to host blockbuster shows including Wicked, Jersey Boys and Mary Poppins.
Interesting Cafes, Bars and Nightclubs to Discover
Melbourne has numerous laneway bars, great cafes and a fantastic nightlife to meet everybody’s taste. Whether you enjoy a nice glass of wine on a rooftop bar overlooking the city, a delicious cocktail made by one of Australia’s best mixologists, or a fantastic coffee, Melbourne is the place for you.
Melbourne is particularly known for its laneway bars, and although they may be hard to find, they are certainly worth the look.
Top Restaurants and Culinary Experiences
There are numerous international and nouveau fine dining options in Melbourne, reflecting the cultural melting pot that makes up its population. Dining options span from the refined elegance of Melbourne’s hatted restaurants, through to casual dining, takeouts and food vans, not to mention the delights of Chinatown.
The variety of food options means that you can always find something tasty to suit your budget.

Was there in May this year, have to admit Melbourne is a fascinating city, very cosmopolitan, like the atmosphere, the variety of food, etc. One thing still baffles me - do the shops still close between 5 to 6 pm daily? I was told it is closing later now, but not at the time when I was there.. maybe I went to the wrong places. :)
